New research released today by the Washington State Department of Health shows the number of people smoking inside homes in our state has declined by 61 percent since 2000. The drop is more than double the overall decline in adult smoking during the same period.

The Food and Drug Administration announced regulations Thursday that ban the sale and marketing of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products to people younger than 18 — measures that, for the most part, already have been implemented by the states.

Declaring that “the historic rule we're issuing today will help our kids to stay healthy by making it harder for the tobacco companies to target them with harmful and addictive products,” U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced on Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration will enforce sweeping changes in the marketing and selling of tobacco products beginning June 22.
