Poll says increased tax a big motivator to quit smoking |

A coalition of groups that successfully lobbied for a state cigarette tax increase has released a survey that shows the increase is responsible for over 50-percent of the people who have tried to stop smoking this year. Sandra Quilty of Iowans for Wellness & Prevention says the poll found 65-percent of smokers are trying to quit.

The "Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids" says its national survey shows Iowa is one of the most improved states in funding programs to protect kids from tobacco. Aaron Doeppers, the midwest director of the organization, says Iowa ranks 18th in the country, which he says puts the state well toward the top and is a big improvement from 2006 when the state ranked in the middle.
