Poll says increased tax a big motivator to quit smoking |

A coalition of groups that successfully lobbied for a state cigarette tax increase has released a survey that shows the increase is responsible for over 50-percent of the people who have tried to stop smoking this year. Sandra Quilty of Iowans for Wellness & Prevention says the poll found 65-percent of smokers are trying to quit.

Secondhand smoke is an emotionally charged issue -- mainly due to fear of the unknown and misinformation. Still, the public needs the facts, minus the emotions, that make this issue worth discussing. Scientific studies, the surgeon general, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association and numerous others agree that secondhand smoke is a cancer-causing substance and should be avoided.
